You asked, we answered!

Hi All,

Some of you have emailed us to ask just what it is we do. The “we” being — the Asian Canadian Cultural Organization (ACCO), of ubc. Here’s a quick briefing about us, as well as some additional information on our upcoming events this year.

What we do:
Our club is not a socializing outlet, we actually promote political awareness as well as socio-cultural understanding about Asian Canadians and the various cultures that form this demographic. Specifically, ACCO pushes for more fair and balanced representations of Asians (whether Sri Lankan, Hong Konger, Japanese, Mongolian, Uyghyr, you get the gist…) within mainstream media, politics and Canadian society in general.
So what do we really do? — we are having two main events this year:
1. An Indie Music Festival —
this festival will be a celebration of all forms of Asian Canadian artists and entertainment. Last year, we featured a range of groups from Broadway Acapella, J-Rock (Japanese rock band), Cambodian Rapper, to hip hop dancers! If you, or your friends are seeking better musical or artistic exposure (whether you sing/rap/dance in English/Punjabi/Korean/etc) please feel free to step up to our request!
2. An Asian Canadian “Love-In”
A mini conference where we will discuss such issues as Asian dating in Canada, inter-Asian romance, Fob vs Local born Asian discrimination, and other things. This event will be fun and free to all, and will culminate in a party where we all hang out and celebrate our diversity!

Our first club meeting of the year will be:
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
Time: 4 – 5pm
Place: Room 315, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre

Everyone - ACCO members and interested general public alike – are welcome and encouraged to join us at this introductory meeting. We look forward to seeing you!

ACCO Icebreaker // 2009 Launch Party

4 Oct

Dear Friends, old and new alike:

The Asian Canadian Cultural Organization is proud to invite you to our 2009 opening party!!

We’ll be explaining exactly what it is that we do; as well as the two major events we will be hosting this year in the name of Asian Canadian social awareness. In addition, we’ll introduce you to our executive team, as well as share with you which executive openings are currently available. We’ll also be talking about some of the funner events and collaborations we hope to have with fellow UBC clubs such as: Perspectives, UBC Postsecret, Asian Music Club, Indo-Canadian Club, etc. And we will introduce some of our local community partnerships with Schema Magazine, the Asian Canadian Writer’s Workshop, CBC, and other affiliates.

And Lastly! we’ll obviously be hanging out, feasting (Italian dishes and hors d’oeuvres for you food fanatics!) and taking time to get to know each other (Games and Prizes).
In spite of ACCO’s socio-cultural and political purposes, we definitely aim to have a lot of fun this year!

An Ending and A New Beginning

4 May

Hi Everyone,

This is my swan song. The semester has come to an end and so has my reign as President of ACCO. It has been an amazing year and I have learned a lot from the executives that have worked so hard this year to make ACCO’s second year a success. I won’t lie as there were many challenges and I would like to use this space to share some thoughts that may help next year’s executives:

1) I think my biggest challenge this year was that I had to completely rebuild the club as all our executives from the first year had graduated. With a lack of a support system, understandably my fear was that the people I recruited would become overwhelm with their duties (as it was the first time for many to take on an executive role) and then I would lose them. So, I became a bit relaxed in holding people accountable as I understand that other priorities came first (family, exams, etc.), BUT I think that was a mistake to an extent as there were preparations that were completed last-minute when they should have been completed way beforehand. So, for the new executives, make sure to understand that people do have other priorities but after taking that into consideration, clearly ask volunteers or club members what the extent of their commitment is and always hold them accountable to what they agree to.

2) Be organized; answer e-mails on time; and follow-up with community volunteers and leaders who want to help advance the organization. Although ACCO is a student club, one of our goals in our mandate is to promote Asian Canadian cultural and community events, and to do so, you must make connections with the community!

3) Establish long-term and short-term goals with all members at the beginning of the year and make sure all members’ voices are heard. Refer back to these goals periodically so that the group will stay on track.

4) Motivate and encourage one another. The team can only be strong as the teamwork that is involved. Everyone’s opinions count and ACCO is only successful as long as the people involved find value in it.

5) Have fun! This is what we certainly did this year :D

Those are my last thoughts as President. As I pass on the torch to Crystal, I know that she will lead with authority and grace and with Kristina as Vice-President, the two of them will make a formidable team. Good luck to the girls and the new executives. If you need anything, I am always here to support and encourage you!

I have met such great people this year and made some beautiful friendships. Thank you everyone for making my Presidency such a wonderful experience.

—————————————————————–

Program:

March 5th, 2009 – Day 1

Opening – 11 am to 11:30 am

Workshop 1 – 11:30 am to 12:50 pm SUB 214

Asian Women are Sooo Exotic
This workshop will open up a nice girly flow of conversation pertaining to the cultural and sexual stereotypes of Asian women in the West. Topics to be addressed include: media representation, family and cultural upbringing, and, sexuality and identity. Led by UBC student Crystal Tai, we invite you to join us in breaking down some of the misnomers that affect Asian women, and help us come up with different ways to counter such misconceptions.

Workshop 2 – 1:00 pm to 2:20pm SUB 214

Asian Man, Take a Stand! Reframing the Angry Asian Man Experience
Are you angry? Asian? Join UBC Students Kenji Shimizu and Mark Lee on a journey of self-discovery. From media portrayals to interracial dating, explore the causes of the angry Asian man phenomenon and discuss practical methods to grow and overcome these problems. Women, non-Asians and the non-angry are also welcome!

Workshop 3 – 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm SUB 214

New versus Old: Conflicts between Immigrants and Canadian-Born Asians
Have you ever wondered where your Asian parent is coming from? Or pondered about what your immigrant and Canadian-Born Asian peers think about one another? UBC student Andrea Chan will explore the culture and value differences between Asian immigrants and CBAs. This workshop will discuss social interactions, thoughts and feelings between those new to Canada and those that are born in Canada and have thus been accustomed to Western culture.

March 6th, 2009– Day 2

Workshop 4 – 12:00 pm to 1:20 pm SUB 214

Drugs, Gangs, and Asian Youth Culture
With the rise of gang-related crimes in the Lower Mainland, the street gang lifestyle has been increasingly associated with Asian Canadians. Police-raided grow-ops have also indicated that Asians own a fair share of these illegal operations. Are these statements a fair assessment? Are Asians really more prone to joining gangs and dealing drugs? UBC students Narith Heng and Angela Wong will lead a workshop examining the association of drugs and gangs with Asian Canadian youths and the social and political consequences it has on the Asian Canadian community.

Workshop 5 – 1:30 pm to 2:50 pm SUB 214

Prudes! Nymphos! Asians? Ideas of Sex in an Asian Canadian Mindset
Did you grow up in a traditional Asian household where sex was a taboo subject? Did you learn about sex through other outlets besides your parents? Are Asian women really better in bed? Do Asian men make bad lovers? UBC students Angela Wong and Crystal Tai will explore traditional Asian concepts of sex and how the younger Asian Canadian generation bridge traditional and western concepts of sex. Ideas of sexual stereotypes associated with Asians and the implications for Asian Canadians will also be examined.

Workshop 6 – 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm SUB 214

The Rise of Canadian-Born Asian (CBA) Culture
In the vibrant and dynamic multicultural city of Vancouver, you can hardly take one step outside without noticing this relatively new phenomenon: Canadian-Born Asian culture. Bubble tea at the movies, Korean Supermarkets in downtown, Anime Conventions attracting thousands of participants and Bollywood movies rapidly gaining a surprising audience: When did it start and how did it become such a ubiquitous and uniquely “Canadian” culture? In this interactive and thought-provoking workshop, UBC students and CBA connoisseurs Rainie Tian and Kristina Chang will take you through the rise of CBA culture in Vancouver and discuss its social, economic, and political implications.

4:30 – 5:00 pm – Closing

Welcome to our NEW website!

12 Jan

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for visiting ACCO’s brand new website! We are excited to be doing this relaunch where you can find up-to-date information on the club and our events, access websites of our community affiliates and sponsors, learn about volunteer opportunities in the Asian Canadian community, and read up on interesting articles and commentaries posted by our talented members.

This month, ACCO is frantically organizing two major events that are coming up in the next several months. The first event will be a fundraiser which will highlight the uniqueness of Asian Canadian performers and artists in the Lower Mainland. The event will be held on Friday, February 20 in the SUB Ballroom at UBC. For those interested in performing, obtaining tickets or finding out more about how YOU can get involved, please get in touch with our Fundraiser Chair, Kristina Chang.

Our second event is ACCO’s second annual UnConference which will be held on March 5 and 6. Like last year’s format, we will have 5-6 workshops focused on different topics that are pertinent to Asian Canadians. The workshops will be faciliated by our members who have been working hard at researching. If you would like to get more information or collaborate in presenting this unique event, please contact our UnConference Chair Andrea Chan.

So, have a look around our website, get to know our fabulous executives, and don’t forget to email us for more information on how you can get involved! Also, if you have Facebook (which I know most of you do), join our Facebook group!
