Current Executive Members

Bard Suen, President

Bard Suen is in his fifth and final year at UBC, completing his Honours Degree in Sociology. Feeding into a research internship he is doing with local non-profit RangiChangi Roots Society, he is conducting research and writing his thesis on cultural diversity and the ‘alternative food’ movement.  After graduation, he plans to apply for graduate school and specialize in food studies. Bard joined ACCO in 2009 as an Event Planner, and fell in love with ACCO’s vision and the passion that its members had for positive change.  Bard is grateful to have the opportunity to work with the ACCO team as President, and hopes to bring something unique to the table in the upcoming year!

Tina Kong, Executive Vice-President

Tina Kong is currently in her fourth year of study in the English Honours program. She stumbled upon ACCO in 2009 and has fallen in love ever since with it’s frank approach to race, sex and politics. Dissecting the Asian Canadian identity as well as media representations of what it means to be Asian are some of the issues that Tina loves to grapple with, Rosie the Riveter-style. Having served as the Event Director for last year’s successful arts festival The Blob, Tina is delighted to return as Vice President, where she will play a role in executing ACCO’s upcoming series of intelligent and (hopefully) controversial workshop-dialogues.

Vegas Cheung, Vice-President, Finance

Sion Kang, Executive Event Coordinator

Sion Kang is a second year student planning to major in Sociology with a minor in Political Science. Sixteen years ago her family, including her autistic sister, immigrated to Canada. The experiences she has encountered in Canada opened her eyes to social issues such as disability and minority rights. Sion found out about ACCO in 2011 and immediately knew there was much she could contribute to. As ACCO’s Executive Event Coordinator, Sion is passionate to organize events that serve ACCO’s goals. After her Bachelor’s Degree, Sion is planning to go into UBC Faculty of Law to become an immigration lawyer.

Sunny Byun, Event Planner

Sunny Byun is a third-year Music student majoring in Piano Performance and minoring in Psychology. At this moment, she is proud to say that she has lived exactly half her life in Korea and half her life in Canada. When she found out about ACCO through the UBC club website, she knew that she could definitely contribute in making ACCO’s goals and visions a reality. Upon joining the club in September 2011, she is delighted to be assigned the role of Event Planner. With her determination and perfectionism, Sunny will work hard to ensure the successes of ACCO’s events during this school year.

Forever Immortalized

Kristina Chang, Honorary Member

Kristina is currently completing a double major in Asian Studies and English Literature at UBC. She first joined ACCO in 2008 as Chair of the inaugural A-JAM music festival, before becoming Vice President in 2009 and serving as President in 2010. Born and raised in Vancouver B.C., Kristina has long been fascinated by Asian Canadian culture and the facilitation of multicultural harmony. She believes that ACCO distinguishes itself in the UBC clubs community as a group of diverse and enthusiastic individuals dedicated to exploring new ideas, creating exciting projects and increasing campus awareness of Asian Canadian issues in a safe and accepting space. An active and passionate volunteer in the community, Kristina currently volunteers with the S.U.C.C.E.S.S. Youth Leadership Millennium Program, TELUS Vancouver Community Board, Civic Education Society and Music BC Charitable Foundation.

Crystal Tai, Honorary Member

Crystal Tai tends to enjoy the finer things in life. A caffeine enthusiast, she can usually be found at one of the better coffee bars on campus. She has a vintage bike that she named Germaine, after the famous Aussie of course. Crystal is a fan of Asian Cinema, and enjoys saving screen captures for making desktop backgrounds later. She is nearing the end of a degree in Political Science, and hopes to travel the rest of Asia once graduated. Crystal comes from the ever-growing city of Hong Kong, a place which has inspired her in countless arenas of her studies. She has felt a lot of frustration coming from the turmoil of growing up on foreign soil. Though Canadian, she feels that Canada still has much to address regarding its multicultural status in the global community. At ACCO, she plans to focus more upon Asian issues within post-colonial life, feminism, generation/immigrant parent-child gaps, neo-Confucian societies and of course the age-old dilemma of ethnic and cultural identity. She hopes that we can celebrate and let our differences all hang out at the coming Un-Conference of 2010.

Mark Lee, Co-Founder

Mark Lee is a professional Student currently studying Communications. A reformed “angry Asian man”, while no longer so dogmatic about it he’s still down with the cause. Mark wants to see the movement move forward by bringing awareness to the masses so future generations don’t have to deal with so many identity issues. His priorities include finding a solution to bridge the gap between the genders and helping frustrated guys find fulfillment. He is proud to see how far ACCO has come and is grateful to have been involved with this year’s UnConference and most likely, next year’s UnConference.

Angela Wong, Co-Founder, Webmaster
Angela Wong is a recent graduate from UBC’s History Honours Programme. Her field of study dealt primarily with the history Asian migration to the Americas, the Sino-Vietnamese, as well as transnational theory. She will be switching her focus to Policy Studies in the Asia Pacific Area and will begin her Master’s at UBC in September 2009. Eventually, she hopes to work in policy-making regarding international refugee crises. Angela has a keen interest in photography, literature, and spending quality time with her friends and family. She has been with ACCO since the beginning and is proud to continue working with ACCO.
