Talent Wanted…

1 Feb

Hey Everyone!

ACCO is currently recruiting talented performers for our upcoming Asian Indie Music Festival which will be held in early March (between Mar 3-5)!

What kind of performers are we looking for? Well, anything and everything, really! All types of artistic expression — whether you sing, dance rap, speak, act, play or entertain, are all welcome. Last year, our music festival featured talented performances by rock bands, a Broadway troupe, rapper, dance crew, live DJ and more!

The goal of this musical evening extravaganza is to promote and celebrate emerging talented, local Asian Canadian performers. We are also using this opportunity to raise funds for the Downtown Women’s Eastside Centre.

If you are interested, or know anyone who is interested, please contact Jung Ah Won at jungahwon@hotmail.com.

Happy New Year (!!), and Asian Parents

24 Jan

Dear friends,

“Alas! A new update” you say? It definitely has been a busy few months, with exams, holiday festivities, etc etc etc. But now that we are nestled in the comfort (?) of a new semester, you can be assured that ACCO will be bringing on some awesome activities in the next few months! Please be sure to visit our page in the next few weeks for news on our upcoming events such as the Lunar New Year party, the Indie Music Festival, and our conference, the Asian-Canadian “Love-In”.

Topic of the week: Asian Parents

This video pretty much sums up my relationship with my parents during adolescence :)

What are your insights? Do the relationships with our parents mould our identities as “Asian-Canadians”?  While there are exceptions to every generalization, Asian parenting (to me) usually entails emphasis on: family values, pursuit of good education (often within the confines of “doctor/lawyer/engineer/accountant”), the importance of working hard, learning to play a musical instrument, and so on. How does our Asian family-relations affect our outlook on life within the Canadian society?

Feel free to use the “comment” feature to express your thoughts on this :)

Until next time,

Teresa

You asked, we answered!

You asked, we answered!

Hi All,

Some of you have emailed us to ask just what it is we do. The “we” being — the Asian Canadian Cultural Organization (ACCO), of ubc. Here’s a quick briefing about us, as well as some additional information on our upcoming events this year.

What we do:
Our club is not a socializing outlet, we actually promote political awareness as well as socio-cultural understanding about Asian Canadians and the various cultures that form this demographic. Specifically, ACCO pushes for more fair and balanced representations of Asians (whether Sri Lankan, Hong Konger, Japanese, Mongolian, Uyghyr, you get the gist…) within mainstream media, politics and Canadian society in general.
So what do we really do? — we are having two main events this year:
1. An Indie Music Festival —
this festival will be a celebration of all forms of Asian Canadian artists and entertainment. Last year, we featured a range of groups from Broadway Acapella, J-Rock (Japanese rock band), Cambodian Rapper, to hip hop dancers! If you, or your friends are seeking better musical or artistic exposure (whether you sing/rap/dance in English/Punjabi/Korean/etc) please feel free to step up to our request!
2. An Asian Canadian “Love-In”
A mini conference where we will discuss such issues as Asian dating in Canada, inter-Asian romance, Fob vs Local born Asian discrimination, and other things. This event will be fun and free to all, and will culminate in a party where we all hang out and celebrate our diversity!

Our first club meeting of the year will be:
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009
Time: 4 – 5pm
Place: Room 315, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre

Everyone - ACCO members and interested general public alike – are welcome and encouraged to join us at this introductory meeting. We look forward to seeing you!

ACCO Icebreaker // 2009 Launch Party

4 Oct

Dear Friends, old and new alike:

The Asian Canadian Cultural Organization is proud to invite you to our 2009 opening party!!

We’ll be explaining exactly what it is that we do; as well as the two major events we will be hosting this year in the name of Asian Canadian social awareness. In addition, we’ll introduce you to our executive team, as well as share with you which executive openings are currently available. We’ll also be talking about some of the funner events and collaborations we hope to have with fellow UBC clubs such as: Perspectives, UBC Postsecret, Asian Music Club, Indo-Canadian Club, etc. And we will introduce some of our local community partnerships with Schema Magazine, the Asian Canadian Writer’s Workshop, CBC, and other affiliates.

And Lastly! we’ll obviously be hanging out, feasting (Italian dishes and hors d’oeuvres for you food fanatics!) and taking time to get to know each other (Games and Prizes).
In spite of ACCO’s socio-cultural and political purposes, we definitely aim to have a lot of fun this year!
